worst ever west ham signings pound for pound
|
This was supposed to be a top 10 list but i got carried away. This list is about value, not just the worst players. Some of them were actually decent.
Thoughts?
1 dyer 2 ljungberg 3 carroll (the most expensive but at least we got some good moments out of him) 4 benni mccarthy 5 Titi camara 6 yarmolenko (sorry but he will be 30 next season and all his re-sale value gone, plus high wages) 7 matt jarvis 8 maiga 9 alou diarra 10 pablo barrera 11 Hutchison (second time we signed him) 12 savio 13 Boa morte 14 Quashie 15 herita llunga (terrible after we signed him permanently) 16 Radiciuou 17 enner valencia 18 diamanti (lost about £6m on him) 19 Faubert 20 Gary Charles 21 Dumitrescu 22 dale gordon
WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!

btw I think you'll find Dyer played 38 games for Newcastle the season before we bought him. Hardly an injury hit season.

List is about right with Dyer and Ljundberg but there have been so many down the years.
Mcknightmare. Ted Mcdougall, John Radford, Dudley Tyler, Justin Fashanu to name just a few that the older gits will recall and while the fees are nothing like those of today you can only stand back and admire the "gift" the club has when it comes to signing what can only be termed as 24 caret "shite"

Suker only made 8 starts, but at least he managed 3 goals!

No one's mentioned Suker?
Carroll to be fair when he's played has scored a few goals. Dyer yeah as to be the worst waste.

Exactly Trev.
It's a hard one with injury prone players, obviously VFM they're shit but there is the luck element there, even if AC doesn't do himself any favours.
Whereas with McCarthy, at the time he was MASSIVE, what an earth was the club thinking? It was 100% Zola's request, he wanted him, I saw him come on in a Cup game a week before we signed him and he couldn't move. Madness.

i agree with Eerie about Carroll. At least he's done something in the few games he has played.
The worse ones for me, in no particular order are:
Dyer - we should never have signed him. Permanently injured. £7m plus massive wages.
Ljungberg - high wages, past it. More money that Curbishley spunked.
McCarthy - a fat waste of space.
Savio - fuck knows how much he really cost, but there was definitely something dodgy about this deal. Brady started to mouth off about it but suddenly went strangely quiet, probably because she would have opened a can of worms. The fact that we sold Diamanti (by the way, he wasn't that bad so shouldn't be on the list) for fuck all was probably also down to the Savio deal.
Camara - see McCarthy. Also tried to sue the club.

Indeed, if you compare Dyer with Carroll, Dyer only earned a bit less than AC's weekly wage (83k v 90k).
Taking into account transfer fee and weekly wages:
Dyer 1.3m per start (664k per appearance) Carroll 390k per start (277k per appearance)

Don't get me wrong, he's been far from a good signing, but we've had a fair bit of contribution from him at least. His goals have kept us up a couple of seasons at least, and he's single handedly won us games.
Benin McCartney gave us absolutely fuck all in return, and wasn't even injured.

Mido was mentioned earlier not quite sure how he comes in as pound for pound one of our worst signings when he was only paid 16k in four months?
We only had Rebrov for a season, and that was in the Championship, his wages weren't high either.

But if playing in trials/friendlies is now the criteria for having played for West ham Then I give you Steve Davies, Kenny Dalglish and erm......me.
